Our paper “CHI@Edge: Supporting Experimentation in the Edge to Cloud Continuum” (Kate Keahey, Michael Sherman, Jason Anderson, and Mark Powers) was presented at PEARC’25 in Columbus, Ohio (July 20–24, 2025), where Mike Sherman gave the talk. The paper describes how CHI@Edge extends Chameleon’s testbed model out to real edge devices — letting researchers bring their own hardware, orchestrate containers across the edge-to-cloud continuum, and run reproducible experiments spanning everything from single sensors to the data center. CHI@Edge builds on years of edge-computing work in our community, including the use cases and discussion gathered at the 2021 CHI@Edge Community Workshop and captured in the resulting CHI@Edge Community Workshop Report. Since then, CHI@Edge has grown into a platform that a wide range of student and research projects rely on, a trajectory you can trace through the posters our summer researchers have brought to SC each year. It starts with early edge-topology work like “One Fish, Two Fish: Choosing Optimal Edge Topologies for Real-Time Autonomous Fish Surveys” (SC’21), runs through the DonkeyCar self-driving experiments of “Chasing Clouds with Donkeycar” (SC’23), and into a wave of environmental-sensing projects at SC’24 — 5G measurement in rural Iowa, power-efficient weather stations, and a smart buoy for coastal ecosystems, all built on the IBIS edge framework — most recently reaching the autonomous bioacoustic wildlife-monitoring poster our summer students brought to SC25.
